I PLEDGE TO REDUCE WASTE AND PEOPLE AND THE PLANET FIRST BY CHOOSING A 'SUSTAINABLE SALON' FOR MY NEXT BEAUTY AND GROOMING SERVICES OR ASKING MY SALON TO BECOME ONE!

Sustainable Salons is a social enterprise that collects up to 95% of salon 'waste' and redirects it for reuse, recycling and repurposing!

By choosing a Sustainable Salon, we're ensuring that materials like hair clippings, aluminium foil, plastic and glass packaging get a second life instead of ending up in landfill!

Will you pledge to help make salon waste history by choosing a Sustainable Salon for your next visit to the hairdresser, beauty salon or pet-groomer?

When you take the pledge, we'll show you how to find a Sustainable Salon near you and will send you info on how to get your local salon to become a Sustainable Salon!

Will you take the pledge?

LET'S CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE SALONS

Salon waste is a huge problem. Hair clippings, foils and packaging from salons almost always end up in landfill where they release harmful greenhouse gases as they break down. And chemical waste makes its way down the drain and into the ocean where it can pollute marine ecosystems.

If you’re in Australia or New Zealand, find a Sustainable Salon near you.

Sustainable Salons go directly to salons to collect materials that would otherwise go to landfill and transform them into usable items that are good for people and the planet! Here's how they do it:

  • Hair clippings are bundled together into ‘Hair booms’ which are used for soaking up coastal oil spills.
  • Ponytails are donated to charities and wig-makers to be made into wigs for those suffering from medically-induced hair-loss
  • Chemical waste is collected and turned back into clean water used for manufacturing and building, rather than going down the drain and contaminating our oceans.
  • Aluminium foil, colour tubes, canisters and product packaging is diverted from landfill and processed for recycling - aluminium can be infinitely recycled!
  • Cardboard, magazines, copy paper and paper packaging are sent to be recycled into new paper products - this process saves almost 31,780 litres of water per tonne!
  • Soft plastics including plastic bags are sent to recyclers and are turned into outdoor furniture, glasses frames and more!
  • Proceeds from materials being sold for recycling are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for hungry people. A full head of foils provides a quarter of a meal to someone in need!
  • And in partnership with specialist organisations in QLD, VIC, WA and NZ, Sustainable Salons creates stronger futures for people with disabilities by providing purposeful work in the collection and processing of materials for repurposing!

Since their launch six years ago, Sustainable Salons and their 1122 participating members have:

  • Saved 829,474kgs of materials from landfill.
  • Diverted 251,957kgs of metal from landfill and turned it into aluminium packaging.
  • Recycled 275,991kgs of paper into new products.
  • Repurposed 3,909kgs of E-waste, preventing harmful toxins leaching into our environment.
  • Donated 169,635+ ponytails to charitable organisations and wig makers for those suffering with medically-induced hair loss.
  • Collected 37,430kgs of hair from the salon floor that can be used as hair booms to soak up 124,766L of oil in a land or ocean spill.
  • Kept 221,747kgs of plastics in circulation and not in our oceans.
  • Recycled 38,440L of chemicals back into water used in construction and manufacturing.
  • Provided 169,000+ meals to the hungry, with all proceeds generated from recycling salon materials being donated to OzHarvest and Kiwi Harvest.
